Heads up, Marvel fans! There are good news and bad news surrounding the future of Spider-Man, one that might affect his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Good news: Two Spider-Man films are currently in the works with Sony. Both of these projects will have director Jon Watts and actor Tom Holland back on their roles for the production.
Bad news: President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige will NOT produce either Spider-Man films over disagreements between Sony and Disney.
According to sources close to Deadline, Sony and Disney have been trying to negotiate both their involvements with the Spider-Man IP. The short story is that Disney tried to offer “a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe.” Unfortunately, Sony turned the offer, without any hesitation, because they didn’t want Disney to have some level of control of their IP. Sony tried to propose the current terms of their arrangement “where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first-dollar gross,” but Disney declined.
This heartfelt news comes with questions for the future of Spider-Man. The disagreement means that Feige will not be a creative producer for the next Spider-Man movies that Sony will be working on, but that doesn’t mean that the character will stop appearing in the MCU. On the other hand, Sony has the power of removing him from the Disney franchise and make way for their own Spider-Man universe. Sadly, only time will tell.
Spider-Man’s introduction to the MCU dates back in 2016 with Captain America: Civil War and was received with praises from fans and general audiences. After the mess that was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the Sony/Disney team-up produce both Spider-Man Homecoming, the first Spidey film set in the MCU, and Far From Home. The latter, being the last installment in the Infinity Saga, made over $1.110 billion worldwide, making it Sony’s highest-grossing film of all time.
UPDATE : Variety confirmed that there’s still a possibility that Sony and Disney could still hit a middle ground for the Spider-Man/MCU deal IF both parties agree.
