Earlier this month, The Matrix (1999) returned to theaters for a limited re-release to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The science-fiction cult classic featured a talented cast led by the Wachowskis (Speed Racer, Sense8) with cinematography spearheaded by Bill Pope (Spider-Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Baby Driver).

Recently, according to reports by CNN and BBC, a fourth film has been officially been greenlit with the trilogy’s two lead actors, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, to return as their respective characters Thomas “Neo” Anderson and Trinity. The last time we saw these characters was at their seemingly unfortunate demises at the end of The Matrix Revolutions (2003). Trinity was impaled immediately after crash-landing at Machine City, and Neo sacrificed himself for the good of his world and of the Matrix.

A prequel to the trilogy featuring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus has been up in the air for quite some time now, but we don’t know if that’s still the case.

Nonetheless, it’s going to be a sight to see our stars return to the action in this fourth film. Agent Smith said that “the purpose of life is to end,” but it doesn’t look like The Matrix will have a lifespan of just three films.
