After leaving us with a huge cliffhanger two years ago The End of the F***ing World is back with a new season and it doesn’t disappoint.
Season 1 left viewers wondering if James (Alex Lawther) had survived being chased and shot by the police, the result of some seriously messed up events that led him and Alyssa (Jessica Barden) to that moment. We don’t get our questions answered right away (as in the first episode), but the wait is worth it.
Season 2 begins by introducing a new character, Bonnie, the first episode is all about setting the ground for this character and to reveal her connection with James and Alyssa. The episode worked out pretty well, I mean it’s hard making it work with new characters and taking the risk of not having either of your main characters for a whole episode, especially when viewers are anxious to find out if one of them is dead or alive. The writing kept things interesting and quickly established Bonnie’s character. However, we don’t have to wait that long to find out what happened to Alyssa after the beach and what she had been up to for the last 2 years.
This season is 8 episodes long, 20 minutes each, which makes it the ultimate binge. Although it feels short, it is the right amount of time to wrap up this story. Overall the pacing is fantastic, there’s no dragging out nor rushing, just right. Even though the story could have already ended back in season 1, albeit a bittersweet ending, these episodes show us that we had yet to see much of these characters and in a way feels like a reward, that after all the crazy things that happened, they can still grow, love and find their place in the world.
All the things that made this show great, the dark humor and drama, are still there, after all the craziness it maintains its essence and manages to keep viewers glued to their screens. Season 2 is great, fun and gives the characters and viewers some closure.
