Are you ready for the history of mystery? The first official trailer for Warner Bros. upcoming animated film ‘SCOOB!’ is here! This trailer promises to give us the first big screen origin for everybody’s favorite gang of amateur ghost detectives. Let’s dive right into it.

First off, the animation of this film looks BREATHTAKING. It’s adorable and appears to lean into a more stylish approach, as opposed to a lifelike look. I prefer animation to really explore its potential, and that seems to be the case with the style of this film.

The trailer begins with a classic mystery gang moment; Shaggy and Scooby talking about snacks. The two sit in a movie theater and check to make sure they’ve got all their favorite theater snacks, before Scooby breaks the fourth wall and starts a narration of the new trailer in a delightful impression of the 90’s trailer voice.

We then see how Shaggy and Scooby met. Shaggy was alone at the beach with a feast and was approached by a stray dog who somehow had the ability to speak. They bond over Shaggy’s feast. When approached by what appears to be an animal control officer, Shaggy lies and says it’s his dog and quickly improvises the dog’s iconic name, Scooby Dooby Do. It was quite cute for Shaggy to name the dog after a box of snacks in front of him. A very Shaggy moment. It cuts to Shaggy giving Scooby his collar and it’s easy to see that the two are best friends. We see the mystery gang as children all meeting for the first time on Halloween. A cute nod to what their professions will be later on in life.

From then on out we get to see the basic plot of the movie: Shaggy and Scooby getting abducted by aliens. You heard that right. The iconic duo is abducted by aliens and it’s up to the rest of the mystery gang to get them back. It’s not the plot I would have envisioned for a Scooby Doo movie, but it does deserve credit for introducing a new idea to the franchise. Maybe the aliens won’t be real and we will get a classic mystery gang unmasking of them. Time will tell on this one.

The plot may be a little bit out there, but overall I really dug this trailer for it’s presentation of Shaggy and Scooby. The two have always been the heart and soul of the franchise, and from what we see in this trailer it’s obvious that Warner Bros Animation has nailed that relationship. Also, it’s been reported that this film will be the first installment in a proposed ‘Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe’. That’s not a joke. Warner Bros will be using this film to establish a shared universe with other classic cartoon series from Hanna-Barbera. Films centered around The Jetsons and The Flintstones are currently in development. Just when you thought you’d seen it all, another shared universe is on it’s way.

‘SCOOB!’ is directed by Tony Cervone from a screenplay by Kelly Fremon Craig. It stars Zac Efron as Fred, Gina Rodriguez as Velma, Will Forte as Shaggy, Amanda Seyfried as Daphne, and Frank Welker as Scooby Doo.

What did you think of the trailer for ‘SCOOB!’? Are you excited for the Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe?
