Another day, another talented performer joining the cast of ‘THE BATMAN’. It’s being reported that recent Juilliard graduate, Jayme Lawson, is joining the cast of the film in an undisclosed role. Lawson has no film credits to her name currently, but during her time at Julliard, she starred in productions of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Coming from Julliard, one of the most respected acting schools in the world, it’s a pretty safe bet to assume that she is a wildly talented actress.
Her role in the film is currently unknown, but seeing as though Reeves has been casting all the big players in the Batman universe, I have an idea about who she could be playing. Based upon the fact that Jeffrey Wright has been cast to play Commissioner Gordon in the film, my hunch is telling me that Ms. Lawson will be playing Barbara Gordon.
For those of you who don’t know, Barbara Gordon is the commissioner’s daughter and later goes on to become Batgirl. The only time we’ve seen Barbara on screen up until this point was her appearance in the much-hated ‘Batman and Robin’ film. She is absolutely a character who needs another chance on the big screen, and with Matt Reeves behind this film, I trust him to give Barbara Gordon justice.
In other interpretations of the character, she becomes crippled by the Joker in a horrific shooting and becomes Oracle. Oracle is a technical expert who works from behind a computer and basically becomes the information network for many superheroes in the DC universe. She’s also one of the co-founders of the Birds of Prey group and aides them often. Seeing as though ‘Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ is coming out early 2020, it could provide some sort of connection with that film, or a subsequent sequel. The DCEU is currently a bit of a mess continuity wise, but Matt Reeves claims that his film will be set in that universe. Introducing Oracle and then having her appear in future films would help to clear it up a bit more.
Jayme Lawson will be joining a star-studded cast featuring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nygma/Riddler, Colin Farrel as Oswald Copplepot/Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred.
