Writer Robert Towne and director David Fincher are rumored to form part of the production for the upcoming Netflix’s Chinatown prequel series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Towne and Fincher will write and produce the pilot for the prequel of the 1974 classic. While there’s no word of who’ll be in the director’s seat yet, they’ll both assume the roles of Executive Producers for the whole series if the pilot is a success.

The Netflix series will follow the life of private investigator Jake Gittes just before the events of the Roman Polanski-directed film. THR reports that the audience will follow Gittes “[…] as he tackles cases involving L.A.’s one percent, endemic corruption, infrastructure and natural resources”. The PI was originally played by Jack Nicholson in the Paramount Pictures movie, but there’s no confirmation as to who will play his younger self in the prequel.

Towne wrote the script for the original film and has won the Academy Award for “Original Screenplay” in 1975.  Fincher has previously worked in other Netflix contents such as House of Cards, the critically acclaimed Mindhunter series and the animated shorts Love, Death & Robots.

When Los Angeles private eye J.J. “Jake” Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband’s activities, he believes it’s a routine infidelity case. Jake’s investigation soon becomes anything but routine when he meets the real Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and realizes he was hired by an imposter. Mr. Mulwray’s sudden death sets Gittes on a tangled trail of corruption, deceit and sinister family secrets as Evelyn’s father (John Huston) becomes a suspect in the case.
