Were you sad to see the Skywalker story end? Did you want to see more of your favorite characters from the original trilogy? Well you’re in luck! While Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the end of the cinematic Skywalker story, nobody said we couldn’t see them in a Disney+ series set in the past. And sure enough, it’s now being reported that the upcoming series about Obi Wan Kenobi is looking to cast a young Luke Skywalker.
Since the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story and it’s casting of Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, fans have been dream casting younger versions of the other big characters from the original trilogy, namely Luke and Leia. Many fans have latched onto the idea of Sebastian Stan, known for his portrayal of Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as a younger Luke. While that casting would be perfect, as there is an undeniable resemblance between a young Mark Hamil and Sebastian Stan, it seems that they will be casting younger. Much younger.
In the very little information we’ve been given about the Obi Wan series, we do know for certain that the series will take place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Seeing as though Luke was born in the final minutes of that film, then this new actor will need to be around eight years old. The last time we had a main character that young in a Star Wars story was when Jake Lloyd portrayed the young Anakin Skywalker in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and that famously didn’t go as planned. Child actors are very hit and miss in movies, and in the Star Wars universe they’ve regularly missed pretty bad. I’d be lying if I said this announcement doesn’t frighten me just a little bit, but we’ll all have to wait and see.
The Obi Wan series is to be directed by Deborah Chow, written by Hossein Amini, and will see Ewan Mcgregor reprising his role as the titular character. It will tell a brand new story of the characters time spent alone on Tatooine as Luke’s protector. The show is expected to enter production sometime in early 2020 for an expected premiere in 2021 on the new streaming service Disney+.
What do you think about the Obi Wan series casting a young Luke? Does it get you more excited for the series? Or does it remind you of young Anakin in The Phantom Menace?
