The Doctor is back after a year-long hiatus and there is a lot to unpack.
As many are aware, this is the second series with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor and with showrunners Chris Chibnall and Matt Stevens. The last series was a matter of conflicting opinions and discussion. Writing had been a bit bland, with some exceptions and there was no main plot, just the weekly adventures. However, now having watched Spyfall it seems it was just the set up for this coming arc.
We follow once again the 13th Doctor with her companions Yas, Ryan and Graham, as MI6 enlists the Doctor’s help to figure out the strange and unexplainable attacks to spies around the world. An unexpected figure is behind these attacks, the Doctor’s archenemy: The Master.
A common problem viewers face with every regeneration is getting used to the new Doctor. These episodes gave The Doctor truly great moments and help viewers embrace Whittaker as the iconic character. Sacha Dhawan’s incarnation of The Master is terrifying and brings out the best of Whittaker’s Doctor. I do hope we see more of him in the future. The companions did not bring much to these episodes, they were overshadowed by The Master’s return.
The Doctor’s relationship with The Master is perhaps one the most interesting in the show, friends turned to rivals and at times reluctant allies. Whittaker and Dhawan’s performances are brilliant and perfectly portray the complicated relationship between these two characters.
The second part of the episode ends by setting up the future arc around the mysterious Timeless Child, mentioned previously in the 11th series and brought up now by The Master, after revealing he destroyed Gallifrey.
These two episodes were quite solid, bringing back The Master was a great decision, yet one can’t help but wonder where did he come from. His previous incarnation, Missy (Michelle Gomez) had sacrificed herself to help The Doctor and chose to be good. Is this a setback to that character development or is this Master a regeneration previous to Missy? It will be interesting to see that story unfold. Moreover, Gallifrey is once again destroyed, a low blow for the Doctor for sure but it could also bring great storytelling, something. Series 12th is setting up nicely and hopefully, it remains on this course.
Score: 7/10
