Off to Neverland! Years after the announcement that a Peter Pan live action remake was in the works, it would seem that we finally have our first bit of information. According to Discussing Film, the movie now titled, Peter Pan and Wendy, will enter production this April in Canada. The title of the film is a reference to the title of the original novel by J.M Barrie that introduced us all to the Darling family and their adventures with a lost boy from Neverland.
This is another installment in the ever growing landscape of live action remakes of animated classics. As we get more and more of these remakes, there has been a growing fan backlash towards them, specifically in the internet film fan community. The most notable criticism is that there is an oversaturation of the market and that the films are just obvious cash grabs. Well, last year saw the release of Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King, with two of those three films grossing over a billion dollars at the box office. As much as it may frustrate a lot of film fans to see more of these films announced, seeing as successful as they are financially, it seems that there is still a demand for these films. And a pretty big one at that.
Peter Pan and Wendy is being directed by David Lowery, director of the previous Disney remake Pete’s Dragon, and was written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. The film is rumored for a debut in 2021 and whether it will be released theatrically or on Disney+ is still unknown at this time.
Are you excited for Peter and Wendy? Or are you one of the many fans who is tired of all the live action remakes?
