Whether or not you are a fan of the final installment of the Skywalker saga, (I personally adored it), it is now safe to say that the film is a considerable financial success. As of yesterday January 14th, it is being reported that it finally crossed $1 billion at the box office, making it Disney’s 7th and final film of 2019 to reach that milestone.

It caps off the ‘sequel trilogy’ as an immense financial success, with all three films reaching $1 billion and over. The first entry into this new trilogy, The Force Awakens, will end up as the most successful film of the trilogy, reaching the heights of over $2 billion globally. The second film in the trilogy, the largely controversial The Last Jedi, will finish in second in terms of financial intake with an overall gross of $1.3 billion. While The Rise of Skywalker will most likely not catch the overall numbers of The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi, it is still a roaring success coming out directly after the disappointing numbers of the anthology film, Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Many fans who have disliked these new films have attempted to deem them as ‘disappointments’ or ‘failures’, and have tried to paint the Star Wars franchise as a dead property. Well, the numbers paint a picture that is quite the opposite. Yes, the films have grossed less and less since Disney’s initial entry into the saga, but consistently reaching $1 billion at the box office is not something to downplay. Only 46 movies in the history of cinema have ever reached that milestone financially, so to have all three of your films in a trilogy reach it is quite a massive accomplishment.

Whether many fans like it or not, Disney led Star Wars is here to stay.
