The time is finally here to once again go hunting for some expensive treasure with dangerous criminals right behind! According to The DisInsider through The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has officially green lit a third National Treasure project.
Writer Chris Bremmer is working on the script for the film with producer Jerry Bruckheimer back on board as well. Both men are coming off of Bad Boys For Life which hit theaters nationwide today and has already received great reviews and is doing well financially. Some fans and critics are already calling it the best film in the franchise and Sony has already green lit a fourth film with Bremmer again on script writing duties.
This news makes sense as a third National Treasure film had been in talks for years after Book of Secrets came out in 2007. As of right now, no news has been announced if stars Nicolas Cage, Jon Voight, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger and Helen Mirren are to return. However, I imagine Disney will at least cast Nic Cage and Justin Bartha again for this installment. Cage was, at the time, a top Hollywood star when these films came out. I also believe Jon Turteltaub would come back as director for a third outing as his work on the first two were great and he’s wanted to do a third film for years. Also, no news on whether it would be a Disney+ exclusive or get a theatrical release.
National Treasure was released in 2004 and grossed $347 million worldwide. The success of the first led to the sequel, Book of Secrets, in 2007, which topped the first to gross $447 million worldwide. Should Disney and company execute the third film right, which I doubt they’ll screw up, the third one should once again top Book of Secrets.
I personally have always enjoyed the National Treasure films and am looking forward to Nic Cage being back on top and getting the respect he deserves. What are your thoughts on this news? Are you excited to see a third film? Also, speaking of Bruckheimer projects, check out our review on Bad Boys For Life!
