Marvel Studios has officially announced that a sequel to the 2018 film Captain Marvel will be entering pre-production. The news does not come as a shock, as every Marvel Studios film to introduce new, titular characters has so far been given sequels.
What is shocking, however, is that WandaVision writer Meghan McDonnell will pen the script, replacing the first film’s writing and directing duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Bringing McDonnell on, in and of itself, is not the shock, but rather the departure from the project of Boden and Fleck.
The film will also be replacing the duo as directors, beginning a search for a female director prior to production. Boden and Fleck have yet to fully depart from the MCU, however, as they remain in talks to direct a Disney+ series.
The Captain Marvel sequel aims to release in 2022, however, plot details have yet to be released. This is most likely due to the script not yet fully written, or Marvel unsure how to proceed in fitting the story into the current universe following the events of Avengers: Endgame. It is reported, however, that this film will be set in the present, marking the first female-led blockbuster superhero flick to take place in the present day.
