The first reactions from DC’s upcoming Harley Quinn led movie, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), have hit the web. The film is a follow-up/spin off of the much maligned Suicide Squad from 2016 and features Margot Robbie reprising her role as the titular character. Well, the film had its world premiere in London yesterday, and it would seem that DC has learned its lesson.
The reactions pouring out from the premiere have been overwhelmingly positive with some calling this the best DC comics film since Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, The Dark Knight. All the reactions, unsurprisingly, are throwing heaps of praise onto Margot Robbie’s performance, as well as the rest of the women in the titular group, the ‘Birds of Prey.’ Ewan Mcgregor is also being praised, with many saying his performance as the villain Black Mask was scene stealing.
In an interesting and surprising turn, many have compared this film to 2016’s Deadpool, as well as the films of director Quentin Tarantino. According to those in attendance of the premiere, this film contains all of his trademark style: tons of blood, excessive swearing, and badass women. Never in my life did I think that a DC film would be compared to a Tarantino film, yet here we are.
Many films have positive reactions from the premiere, but end up receiving a mixed to poor reaction after the fact. DC fans know this all too well as the reactions of Batman v Superman from it’s premiere were quite positive. Sadly, that didn’t end up being the case when it was widely released to general audiences. We can all rest assured though, as the reactions from the Birds of Prey premiere are from established critics, so *hopefully* this film is a winner.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is directed by Cathy Yan from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. It is set to be released on February 7th.
Do these reactions get you hyped for Birds of Prey? Will you be there opening weekend? Or did Suicide Squad leave you feeling too burned?
