Horror fans can possibly rejoice as the popular franchise is set to be rebooted by Legendary Pictures. Legendary has finished a deal with up-and-coming directors Ryan and Andy Tohill to reboot the 1974 classic horror picture.

Chris Thomas Devlin is set to write the script and Fede Alvarez & Rodolfo Sayagues are set to produce through their company Bad Hombre. The Tohill’s biggest picture was 2018’s The Dig, an Irish film about a man released from prison after fifteen years and must now help the father of his victim find her body. They have also directed a few other short films from the mid-2010s.

For those unaware, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, directed by Tobe Hooper, was obviously set in Texas and followed two siblings and three of their friends who go on a road trip to find the siblings’ grandfather’s grave. They eventually take a wrong turn and cross paths with a family of cannibalistic psychopaths and the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface.

Since the first take in 1974, the film series has had three sequels, including one with Viggo Mortensen and another with Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger. Then in 2003, Michael Bay rebooted the franchise and that film spawned a 2006 prequel. Since then, Lionsgate has released two films following the prequel: Texas Chainsaw 3D and Leatherface. Legendary then acquired the film rights and have taken this as an opportunity to completely revamp the franchise.

Plot details are being kept heavily under wraps and a release date has yet to be set, although I can see this film releasing in the summer or fall of 2021. I could also see an early 2022 release as well in any case.

The 1974 film is a cult classic and my hope is that Legendary can do right by true horror fans and finally give us a good, if not great, Texas Chainsaw film. This is one of my favorite slasher film franchises and all we, as slasher fans, can do is hope. But as we all know, hope is a dangerous thing.

How are you feeling about this news? Are you excited to see another new take on Leatherface? Also, what’s your favorite horror, or slasher, film franchise? For more on this reboot and other horror movie news, keep it right here at The Cinema Spot!
