The Cybermen are back, and they are wreaking havoc.
In the last episode, viewers met the Lone Cyberman, the one Jack Harkness wanted to warn the Doctor about and in this episode we see him rebuilding the army of the Cybermen.
In this episode, the different pieces of information we have been giving throughout this series are slowly coming together and revealing the big picture. This episode introduces Brandon, a mysterious character, who somehow survived getting shot and falling from a cliff and seems to be somehow connected to the Timeless Child. The episode ends with the Doctor seeing Gallifrey through a portal and the return of the Master and promises a series finale that could change everything.
Ascension of the Cybermen brings back some pretty heavy stuff for the Doctor, not only related to Gallifrey but also to what she has lost to the Cybermen. This episode and the previous one, bring Doctor Who back to its glory, with classic villains and great moments for the Doctor.
This series has been a mixed bag, with some pretty great episodes, as well as some mediocre ones. This has been extremely frustrating as it felt as they hadn’t been using Jodie Whittaker’s full potential. Luckily it seems the writers have finally found their footing and these last episodes have reached the level of quality storytelling Whovians are used to and help solidify Whittaker as the Doctor. The next episode is the series 12 finale and one can’t help but feel excited about what is coming next.
Score: 8/10
