The latest Outlander episode is filled with nostalgia, drama….and more drama.
This episode brings viewers back to the 60s with a flashback shortly before Claire takes Brianna to Scotland. The death of a patient, Graham Menzies, has a profound effect on her and ultimately leads Claire to travel with her daughter to the United Kingdom and to tell Brianna the truth about her father.
In the current timeline, in the 1700s, Claire’s penicillin experiment is successful, she operates on Josiah and Kezzie and removes their tonsils. On the other side of the Ridge, Roger finds the gemstone Stephen Bonnet gave Brianna when she went to see him in prison, a gemstone meant for Jemmy, who Bonnet believes to be his son. Since the revelation that Bonnet’s still alive, Brianna has been struggling with the trauma and it only worsened when Mrs. Bug told her about an Irishman who started speaking to Jemmy, which she tells Roger about.
Elsewhere we have Jamie, who after days (probably weeks) of traveling to find men to join the militia to fight the Regulators, meets again with Lt. Knox, things get complicated and the Lieutenant finds out about Jamie’s connection with Murtagh. During the discussion, Jamie kills Knox and burns the evidence that links him with Murtagh.
The highlight of the episode was, of course, Adso the cat! After fleeing the murder scene, Jamie finds a stray kitten, whose cuteness is irresistible and takes him to the Ridge.
The tension with the Regulators will surely keep rising and a confrontation is to be expected. Until now Jamie had been treading the line lightly, trying to protect Murtagh and keep the oath he made to Governor Tryon at the same time. His actions in this episode will surely have some consequence but to what extent it is difficult to say.
Brianna’s arc is not something unexpected, on the contrary, but it doesn’t make it any easier to watch. Once again I found myself extremely frustrated by Roger’s actions, even though he quickly amended his wrongs. This back and forth with Roger makes it extremely difficult to like the character and this is coming from someone who likes Roger from the books. On the other hand, Roger’s relationship with Claire has been a really great surprise and their interactions are always nice additions.
Overall the episode was pretty good, it further develops this season’s different storylines and brings some new information about our characters.
Score: 7/10

A small error in this episode, when Claire says her patient tested negative for penicillin allergy, then says “the probability of a false positive is less than 5%”. She meant the probability of a false Negative, which is the chance the test showed incorrectly that he was negative for penicillin allergy.
