After a rocky start, Universal Pictures has finally created a path that will launch their Dark Universe, especially in the wake of the massive success of Leigh Whannel’s The Invisible Man. Now, the studio is looking to reboot yet another classic horror film from 1955 titles Night of the Hunter. Set to write the screenplay is Matt Orton.
The original film was directed by Charles Laughton, and stars Robert Mitchum, Peter Graves, Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters, Sally Jane Bruce, and Billy Chapin. The story follows Reverend Harry Powell (Mitchum) as he sets his murderous sights on women using sexuality to attract men. After learning murder Ben Harper (Graves) hid $10,000 before his execution, Powell becomes determined to find the money at any cost, using Harper’s family as his starting point.
Amy Pascal and Peter Gethers will produce the film, which has yet to find a director.
