Episode 4 of Defending Jacob is sort of a cool down from the last three episodes we’ve seen. As the episode opens you see Laurie at the grocery store and Andy at the local pool. Both of them are there at the earliest hours of the morning to avoid being seen by anyone. The episode cuts back to Jacob being questioned by Joanna and his story is very twisted. He goes back and forth on what he did when he found Ben’s body and you can sort of see Laurie start to second guess more than she did before.
One thing I mentioned in my review of the first three episodes was the lack of at-home time. I wanted to see more of a family dynamic and how they’re all dealing with this out of the public eye and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was more of that content in this episode. One of my favorite scenes was when Andy and Jacob are watching a movie after dinner one night. Jacob suggests that they make movie night a weekly tradition. The scene is so short, but it’s a nice little escape from what has happened and what’s about to happen.
Laurie goes out one night and befriends a woman at a diner. At first, it seems that the woman doesn’t know who Laurie is and what her story is. After Laurie breaks down crying the woman reveals that she is a reporter and wants to talk to Laurie about the case. She leaves immediately but doesn’t tell Andy what happened. Personally, I have a feeling that it will come back to bite her.
We’re also introduced to Andy’s father in this episode, well we’re introduced to the backstory a little more. Andy is forced to acknowledge what his father did and has to visit him in prison to get his DNA. Based on the ending of the episode it’s safe to assume his father will play a bigger role next week.
There wasn’t much drama this week, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the episode. It shed some light on quite a few of the situations. Some of them I didn’t even discuss because I’d have to mark this a full spoiler review. It’s definitely building up to something big. We’ve only got four episodes left so stay tuned!
