Many fish in the sea, and only so many places to hide.
What We Do in the Shadows‘s sixth episode of its second season is titled “On the Run;” it is directed by Yana Gorskaya, and written by Stefani Robinson (Atlanta).
Some spoilers ahead for those who have not yet watched the episode or the series. If you haven’t done either, you should get to that now, then return to this article!
Legendary actor Mark Hamill makes his debut guest appearance as Jim the Vampire, and he’s oh so wonderful to have on the show.
The episode gets its title from Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry)’s run from Hamill’s character, to whom he owes a debt after failing to pay rent on a Californian beach house. The plot this week revolves primarily on Cravensworth fleeing to from New York to Pennsylvania under the notion that it rhyming with Transylvania is interesting.
Berry and Hamill stand out as the best performances this week, with Berry’s Cravensworth starting a new life as a bartender and a part-time volleyball coach and Hamill just acting the heck out of his character, for some reason being in possession of business cards with the character’s name on them. The story develops these characters more than the others of the series. We learn that Cravensworth is great at creating shadow puppets. Their fight towards the end of the episode is hilarious, especially with how Cravensworth handles the bar he left behind and his peculiar conception of how insurances work.
Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) pretends to hit on Cravensworth’s wife Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) in order to drain her energy. This continues from last week’s episode where he has been draining the life force out from his coworkers at the office.
“On the Run” is a lovely episode for the series that demonstrates vampires’ love for the little things. As Cravensworth and Jim the Vampire say, “Even the most wealthy of vampires would struggle to pay what you owe … but even the most wealthy of vampires, they don’t own what I own.” Throughout the series, the main vampires have tried to acclimate to the twenty-first-century environment and this often fails. For instance, they have always taught themselves to fly in bat form but never learned to drive a vehicle. The episode makes great use of Mark Hamill’s character and gives promise of an eventual return to the series. Excellent writing on Stefani Robinson’s end!
8.5/10
