“If you can’t beat the boys by strength, throw something that boys can’t hit; a knuckleball.”

Director Choi Yun-tae aims to make “go big” with his first solo-directed film Baseball Girl. Casting Lee Joo-young, classically known for her role in Itaewon Class, as main character Joo Soo-in provides a strong foundation as fans make their way over to see more of their favorite protagonist.

Lee Joon-hyuk, starring as Joo Soo-in’s baseball coach, comes from series such as Along with the Gods: The Last and 2019 Korean drama The Lies Within (as per Hancinema). It will be interesting to see how he pulls off a totally different character!

Created as part of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA)’s advanced feature film course, Baseball Girl boasts the trial and triumph of a high school girl baseball player in her journey to define herself after high school (HanCinema). Due to this plotline, this film is perfect for high school and college graduates trying to discover who they are and what path they are going to take. As Joo Soo-in challenges herself to enter professional baseball, we prepare ourselves for the challenges this pandemic creates. We challenge ourselves in starting anew and putting our best foot forward.

After watching this film’s trailer, similar themes could be found in the Disney-favorite Asian-centered movie Mulan. Both Mulan and Joo Soo-in struggle to achieve their role in a male-dominant field. Both juggle the doubts presented by those closest to them, and both put their skills and determination to the test in order to achieve their dreams and their destiny.

A conversation from the movie trailer:

“I used to dream about being a pro baseball player as a child. But even then, girls couldn’t play baseball.” “Why?” “I wanted to, but I couldn’t imagine being a pro baseball player. But possibly….I think you can do it.”

If you’re into Korean movies, feminist themes, supporting film academies, or just want to see Lee Joo-young in action once again, keep your eyes peeled for this fastball of a movie!
