Contrary to popular belief this is not a scary movie. By popular belief I mean my friends who are frightened by David Bowie in tights and a few muppets. I digress. Labyrinth is one of the greatest films to ever exist. Not only is this my opinion, but it is also the absolute truth. I do not make the rules.
I am the youngest grandchild so I spent a great deal of time with my older cousins. One of those cousins is a massive Jim Henson/Muppets fan. She introduced me to several 80s movies, all of the older Muppet movies and you guessed it, Labyrinth. Any time I went to her house we’d watch it. Aside from her I only had one other friend who heard of the movie, let alone actually liked to watch it. Slumber parties at her house always included Labyrinth as well.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story, I’ll give you a synopsis. Sarah (Jennifer Connelley) is forced to babysit her brother Toby (Toby Froud) one night when her father and step-mother go out. When Toby won’t stop crying Sarah wishes that the Goblin King would come and take her brother away. This is a story that she is reciting lines from in the beginning of the film. Sarah believes it’s just a fairytale, but when Toby abruptly stops crying Sarah realizes he’s gone. Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) shows up and tells Sarah that he is keeping her brother in his castle at the center of Goblin City. Sarah must solve the labyrinth in time or her brother will become a goblin forever. She begins her journey, meets some friends along the way and races against time to save Toby.
If you were at all skeptical about this movie I hope you reconsider. A movie theater near my house that specializes in playing older films was playing this on my birthday last year and I finally got to see it on the big screen. It was one of the coolest experiences ever and I was reminded all over again why I love the film so much. It’s whimsical and imaginative. If you’ve seen it please let me know. Tell me on twitter at @msfrancescaaloe so I know I’m not alone in loving this film! Don’t forget to follow us at @TheCinemaSpot to stay updated on all things cinema.
