The Cinema Spot has learned that Apple is eyeing to buy the distribution rights to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes for their Apple TV+ streaming service!
Lionsgate was quick to adapt the dystopian action-adventure novel into a feature film, but perhaps the tides are changing with Apple making big moves as of late.
The Hunger Games prequel book was written once again by author Suzanne Collins, and was released on May 19, 2020. You can read the synopsis below:
Set against the backdrop of the 10th Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes revolves around the adventures of a teenage Coriolanus Snow, who would become the dictatorial president of Panem by the events of the original trilogy. With his family on the brink of poverty, Coriolanus is tasked with mentoring District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird for his one shot at glory.

Something worth noting is that Apple is not just eyeing a solo prequel movie. Apple hopes to turn The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes into a movie trilogy. Considering the fact that no book sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has been announced yet, it is possible that book fans can expect two more prequel books from Collins.
It is also likely that the movie will be skipping a theatrical release altogether, in favor of being exclusively released on Apple TV+, the new streaming service from Apple.
Hunger Games alum Francis Lawrence will return to direct. He previously helmed the past three films, which consist of Catching Fire, and both Part 1 and 2 of Mockingjay. Meanwhile, Catching Fire co-writer Michael Arndt will pen the script. Production will take place in Ontario, Canada.
To be clear, Lionsgate and Apple are most likely not negotiating this deal yet. Apple is still in the “exploratory stage” regarding this deal and most likely have not contacted Lionsgate yet.
There is no release date as of now, nor any front-runners for the role of Snow.
