Two weeks ago my film recommendation was a movie introduced to me by an older cousin when I was very young. This week we’re sticking with that theme, except a different cousin. I think I was maybe 6 or 7 when I first saw The Princess Bride. I was captivated. There’s comedy, action, romance and rodents of unusual size! What more can you ask for? I’m a sucker for a cult classic. You might have figured that out when I recommended Heathers and Labyrinth. I love how quotable this film is and how it easily carries down from generation to generation.
A grandfather (Peter Falk) is reading the story of The Princess Bride to his grandson (Fred Savage) who is sick in bed. At first, the grandson is turned off from the story because he doesn’t like romance, but he doesn’t want to disappoint his grandfather. Buttercup (Robin Wright) is a farm girl who gets chosen to be the princess bride to Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). She doesn’t love him because she is still not over her first love, Westley (Cary Elwes). Buttercup is under the illusion that Westley is dead after he went off to sea. Before the wedding, Buttercup is kidnapped by Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), Fezzik (André the Giant), and Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin). The four of them are pursued by pirates who are also being pursued by Prince Humperdinck.
So yes, although romance is the forefront of the film, it doesn’t lack adventure whatsoever. Whether your draw is Robin Wright as a complete and total icon, Mandy Patinkin uttering the iconic line “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”, or you just love 80s movies I promise this won’t disappoint. You can watch it now on Disney+.
