This episode felt like it was all about the choices we make, especially regarding Yolanda Montez. As we begin the episodes three months prior to current events, we see how happy Yolanda was with Henry King Jr. before Cindy leaked an inappropriate picture Yolanda had sent to Henry. Throughout the episode, you can tell Yolanda is ashamed of her actions but still remains to be strong day by day despite the shame from everyone around her. The moment Courtney starts bonding with Yolanda, all this changes as Yolanda begins to not feel sorry for herself anymore and accepts what she did.
Everything regarding both Courtney/Yolanda’s dynamic was great to see especially with that montage of Yolanda testing out her powers. I loved how they both were bonding over being new superheroes especially with Yolanda falling naturally into the role of one. Seeing the two work together investigating the hospital for who was visiting Brainwave was great to see too. Seeing Yolanda go from being angry to sympathizing with Henry at the sight of his father lying in a coma was a great turning point for her. This just comes to show how in just three episodes so far, the series really knows how to handle character development without it feeling unlikely or forced. Henry may come off as an insensitive jock, but in reality he has a soft side for his father (even if he is a supervillain).
Some other noteworthy things that I enjoyed was the Icicle/Dragon King scene, Pat becoming more aware that the Injustice Society’s reach is a lot more deep than he may have thought, and Beth finding out Yolanda is Wildcat with her super hearing. I am very curious to see how Pat finds out what happened to Denise — is she dead? — and the rest of the New JSA recruitment. Dragon King is definitely pretty intriguing, and I’m excited to see more of him as the season progresses as well.
Overall, this “smaller-scale” episode was a nice breath of fresh air for the season so far, especially after last week’s episode. (RIP Joey and William Zarrick.)
