Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen is about to cause all sorts of trouble in the DCEU.
In a shocking announcement, The Wrap is reporting that Michael Keaton will be reprising his role from nearly 30 years ago as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming Flash solo film.
Keaton will be returning to the role after his departure following the release of Batman Returns in 1992. In addition to his appearance in this film, Keaton is reportedly going to serve as a potential Nick Fury type figure in future DCEU movies.
If you’re not familiar with DC comics, then you’re probably all sorts of confused right now. The Flash film will be loosely adapting the DC storyline “Flashpoint” where Barry Allen runs back in time to save his mother from being murdered and prove his father’s innocence. In the process, he rips a hole in the space time continuum and causes all sorts of trouble.
With this announcement, it is all but confirmed that Michael Keaton’s Batman exists in his own universe and that Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen will accidentally enter it. Additionally, with him potentially serving a Nick Fury type role, we will be spending a substantial amount of time in the Keaton universe going forward. Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman actor to date, so I am absolutely over the moon with this news.
A few days ago we reported that Jeffrey Dean Morgan was circling an appearance as Thomas Wayne/Batman in the Flash film. This new bit of news with Keaton does not change that potential appearance of Morgan. As stated earlier, Miller’s Flash will be entering a variety of different universes in this film, so there will undoubtedly be many different versions of Batman in the film. In the current DCEU, Barry has a father and son type relationship with Bruce Wayne, so it would make sense that Barry would try and find Bruce in the different universes for some sort of guidance.
The Flash solo film will star Ezra Miller as Barry Allen and is set to enter production in early 2021 for a 2022 release. The film will be directed by Andy Muschietti, known for directing the IT films, and written by Birds of Prey writer, Christina Hodson.
What do you think about this news? Are you excited for Keaton’s return as the caped crusader? Or are you concerned that this will be too confusing for audiences?
