With releases planned for the next two years, DC is looking to deliver the most films in a back-to-back period than ever before. With the likes of The Batman, Black Adam, The Suicide Squad, and The Flash releasing by the end of 2022, fans of the DCEU have much to be excited about.
The superhero film giant is certainly already planning out which films to slate next and which characters to finally adapt for the big screen. DC is sure to have at least one new film in theaters every year going forward, alongside HBO Max miniseries.
Based on past reports, rumors, and previous films, fans should already have a bit of an idea as to what projects DC has in store. Today, I’m going to predict the possible future slate of the DCEU from 2023 and beyond.
2023
New Gods
Director Ava DuVernay alongside celebrated comic book writer Tom King are set to bring the worlds of New Genesis and Apokolips to the big screen. The two were confirmed to be working on the script in 2019. If all goes well, casting should hopefully begin soon, with filming possibly starting later next year. Zack Snyder’s Justice League will introduce audiences to Darkseid and possibly tease the existence of Apokolips. The comic lore of the New Gods is compelling and would make for interesting world building within the DCEU.
Batgirl
Birds of Prey and the upcoming Flash movie writer Christina Hodson is set to pen the screenplay for an upcoming Batgirl film. It seems unlikely that this iteration of the character will connect to the Matt Reeves Batman universe. With the Multiverse now in play, it is possible to have multiple Barbara Gordons in the DCEU. The Bat-family of characters always seems to resonate with fans and Christina Hodson is on a hot streak with her DC scripts, so it seems likely that this project will see the light of day sooner rather than later.
Green Lantern Corps
With a Green Lantern, HBO Max show confirmed to be in development, the status of the Green Lantern Corps film seems to be under question. However, I predict that the show won’t actually use famous lanterns Hal Jordan or John Stewart and will instead focus on other characters such as Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, or Simon Baz. The film might focus on the two-star Lanterns and eventually cross over with the HBO Max miniseries. The world and characters of the Green Lantern comics are too popular and interesting to keep shelved for long.
2024
Shazam! 3 (Shazam vs Black Adam)
Following the release of Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, fans will be eager to see the fated face-off between these two characters. Warner Bros would be smart to slate a third Shazam film soon and keep the wait after the second film short. This film could also serve as an opportunity to bring Superman back into the DCEU and bring him into the fight against Black Adam.
Gotham City Sirens
Although Birds of Prey did not do as well as expected at the box office, fans still love Harley Quinn, and her appearance in the upcoming The Suicide Squad is sure to leave audiences wanting more of her zany character in the DCEU. A Gotham City Sirens film has already been rumored to be in development. By bringing in popular characters like Poison Ivy and Catwoman, better box office performance should be easier to guarantee.
Superman solo film
A new Superman solo film would be a long time coming. Fans have waited patiently since 2013 to see the iconic character lead his solo project again. Hopefully, Henry Cavill can sign a new contract soon and WB can hire a talented writer and director to helm the project. Done right, a new Superman film would bring the character back into the spotlight and perform well enough at the box office to launch a new trilogy of films for the Man of Steel.
The Batman 2
It seems almost certain that Matt Reeves will be looking to film a sequel to the upcoming The Batman not long after the first releases. It would be safe to assume that a new Batman film set in that universe will release at least once every three years, especially if the first is well received. A sequel would provide Reeves the opportunity to further flesh out his version of Gotham and introduce his interpretations of other Batman villains.
2025
Justice Society of America
Dwayne Johnson recently confirmed the introduction of the JSA in the upcoming Black Adam film. With a Justice League film unlikely to hit theaters anytime soon, a JSA film could be the action-packed team-up film that audiences are hungry for. This could be the perfect opportunity to introduce some lesser known DC heroes to audiences and flesh out the characters we will be introduced to in Black Adam.
Aquaman 3
The billion-dollar hit of 2018 already has a sequel slated for 2022. Assuming audiences flock to theaters for the sequel as they did for the original, a third film is sure to be slated. The world of the Aquaman comics is vast and moviegoers are craving more time in the incredible world of Atlantis.
Crisis on Infinite Earths
What better way to utilize the Multiverse concept than adapt the famous Crisis on Infinite Earths comics storyline for the big screen? DC Fandome made it clear that the Multiverse is going to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the DCEU. Audiences will soon be able to enjoy multiple iterations of Batman on screen and possibly see alternate versions of other heroes in the upcoming Flash film. Instead of tackling another Justice League film, a team-up movie with multiple versions of characters from all across the multiverse would make for a more ambitious and game-changing entry in the comic book movie space.
