Joining the cast of ‘Batwoman’ we have ‘London Has Fallen’ and ‘Dominion’ alum Shivaani Ghai set to play the role of Safiyah Sohail. Heavily teased throughout the first season Safiyah is described as,”the fiercely protective ruler of a small community on the island of Coryana. A woman with as many enemies as aliases, she is compassionate and charismatic with both physical and psychological prowess. She is beloved by her people and will stop at nothing to protect what’s hers. No one goes unnoticed by Safiyah, specifically when it comes to those who have encountered the Desert Rose.”

As you may recall from season 1, the Desert Rose was the cure to the rare poison administered to Mary Hamilton and her mother Catherine by the ruthless Alice. With Safiyah now presumably coming to Gotham, it seems like both Alice and Mary will come into the cross-hairs of the season’s main antagonist. in the comics Safiyah is connected to the organization known as the Many Arms of Death which has also been teased throughout season 1. In season 1 we saw The Rifle who was a member of this organization and based off casting calls we know they are currently casting “The Whisper” who is most likely Whisper A’Daire another member of this organization. Based off of leaked audition tapes we know that new series lead Ryan Wilder’s mother will have been killed by Scarecrow who is most notably a member of this organization in the comics utilizing the code name of “The Needle”. It’s interesting that Safiyah is only listed as a “major recurring role” which could indicate plans have changed for her to be the season’s big bad? Could possibly mean Scarecrow might end up being the new big bad of the season as Safiyah in the comics has been a neutral character.

A big change from the comics that season 1 has already established is that Safiyah won’t have ties to Kate Kane but instead her sister Alice. Safiyah’s involvement in the series will most likely take heavy inspiration from volume one of the rebirth one known as “Batwoman:The Many Arms of Death.” Shivanni joins previous series regulars Camrus Johnson(Luke Fox), Rachel Skarsten(Alice), Nicole Kang(Mary Hamilton), and Dougray Scott(Jacob Kane) as well as new series lead Javicia Leslie(Ryan Wilder/Batwoman). Season 2 is set to premiere in January 2021 at 8pm on Sundays.
