Before there’s a chance to fancast who Robert Pattinson will square off with as Joker, the bombs keep dropping over at Warner Brothers and DC as The Hollywood Reporter confirms Jared Leto will return as Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Leto’s Joker, who was thought to be a distant memory after his last appearance in 2016’s Suicide Squad, will be joining the filming of additional scenes that are taking place for Snyder’s four-part mini series set to release next year on HBO Max.
Snyder was forced to drop out of directing duties for the theatrical Justice League due to a personal family tragedy, with Joss Whedon (The Avengers) expected to be the saving grace for the film. Unfortunately, the theatrical version turned out to be an unsuccessful Frankenstein’s monster which nixed most of Snyder’s original vision in favor of additional scenes filmed during reshoots that took place after Snyder’s departure. Fans saw through the theatrical version of the film ever since its release in 2017, and have been championing the “Snyder Cut” up until 2020. During DC FanDome in August of 2020, the Snyder Cut was announced, along with the news that it would be released on Warner’s new streaming platform HBO Max.
THR has also confirmed that Leto will be joining Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, and Amber Heard as they are all currently on set filming the additional scenes for the series. Leto’s Joker in this project is a huge win for fans of the DCEU, as it’s been 4 years since we’ve seen this interpretation of the character, and he was nowhere to be seen in the theatrical release of Justice League.
