Back in April of this year, stuntman of Marvel Cinematic Universe fame Sam Hargrave made his directorial debut on Netflix (reviewed by our own Zeke Blakeslee). In the months that followed–we received news of a sequel in development. Now, writer Joe Russo debriefs that the sequel to Extraction will start filming soon. While promoting his newest production Mosul, Russo set a start date for filming expected in 2021. He further states production is in “script phase” but “super excited” to begin. He also shared some details with Collider back in May not long after the sequel announcement. The sequel discussions went for “over a month” before release. The film’s reception then “cemented it”.
Where Extraction‘s Sequel May Start Filming Narratively
Before we set our sights on filming, we must ponder over what’s been filmed. Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake seems to live on–almost as a phantom–upon completion of the mission Extraction depicts. He sinks further into his nothing-left-to-lose rabbit hole. It leaves a clean slate for the next adventure that either follows or delves into Rake’s past. Rudhraksh Jaiswal’s Ovi Mahajan remains a character evolved from shared experiences with Rake. This leaves audiences hopeful for their continued chemistry. The first installment’s stunts and cinematography are highlights of the film, made clear even by its trailer. We can expect such spectacle to be a throughline in the next installment.
When it comes to setting, the uniqueness of the Bangladesh landscape makes curious where the story will go next. The “where”, Russo states, is a defining factor of an Extraction franchise. Russo said: “There’s critical aspects of [Extraction] that you would want to carry over as part of the main tenets of a franchise. And location is a big part of that.” Unfortunately–although news broke on the start of an Extraction sequel’s filming–no news was shared on the actual filming locations. This leaves one of the most integral parts of the narrative a mystery. Similarly, for the “when”, Russo could neither “confirm or deny” the time in Rake’s life which the next installment would take place.
