In an unsurprising turn of events, Sony‘s Spider-Man spinoff Morbius has been delayed. Starring Jared Leto as the titular antihero, Morbius was expected to release on March 19. With the delay, the Spider-Man villain will hit the silver screen on October 8 of this year.
The official synopsis from Sony Pictures for Morbius is as follows:
Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.
Morbius offers audiences a cast that includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, and Tyrese Gibson, and will be the second Spider-Man villain to receive a solo film. 2019’s Venom debuted to mixed reviews, with many criticizing the film’s lack of Spider-Man. Now, with Sony’s announced Sony Picture’s Universe of Marvel Characters, audiences will be getting far more films in the SPUMC, as a Spider-Woman movie with Olivia Wilde was also announced.
Though the delay is expected, it is still a disappointment that Sony’s SPUMC continues to face problems. Previously, rumors of a Silver and Black film made the rounds. That project was later confirmed to have been in development and subsequently cancelled. There had also been rumors of a Madame Web movie in early development, though that project may have either morphed into the Spider-Woman film.
The timeline of the SPUMC has also been murky. Following Venom‘s announcement, then-producer Amy Pascal stated the symbiote’s solo outing would be set in the MCU. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige then dismissed those claims. Still, the two contracted one another’s claims for some time more.
Most recently, writer-producer Roberto Orci was reportedly developing an unknown Spider-Man spinoff for Sony back in March. Orci previously worked on 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man, the reboot led by Andrew Garfield and Marc Webb. With reports that Garfield is returning to the role in Sony and Marvel’s untitled Spider-Man 3, it is possible that Orci could be continuing a story thread that will be introduced in Tom Holland’s third film.
With the state of the world as it is with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, expect more films to be delayed.
