The Great Gatsby is heading to the small screen as A+E Studios teams with Michael Hirst to develop a limited series.
Joined by ITV America Studios, A+E Studios and producer Michael Hirst (Vikings, Tudors) will be developing the live-action series based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is reported that the Fitzgerald estate will also be involved in the production of the limited series.
This marks the first official production in development of the classic story since it entered into the public domain this year. Despite this, however, The Hollywood Reporter claims their sources have held the rights to develop a project based on the novel since 2000. The year 2000 marked the year that A+E Studios developed a made-for-television film that starred Paul Rudd, Toby Stephens, and Mira Sorvino. Reportedly, the project was secretly in development at Apple, most likely for their infant AppleTV+ service, until the company backed away.
Hirst spoke of the original novel and of his upcoming project:
“I seem to have lived with Gatsby most of my life, reading it first as a schoolboy, later teaching it at Oxford in the 1970s then re-reading it periodically ever since. As the critic Lionel Trilling once wrote: ‘The Great Gatsby is still as fresh as when it first appeared, it has even gained in weight and relevance.’ Today, as America seeks to reinvent itself once again, is the perfect moment to look with new eyes at this timeless story, to explore its famous and iconic characters through the modern lens of gender, race and sexual orientation. Fitzgerald’s profoundly romantic vision does not prevent him examining and exposing the darker underbelly of the American experience, which is why the story speaks to both tragedy and hope, and why it continues to resonate today.” via THR.
The latest rendition of The Great Gatsby starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film grossed $353.6 million at the box office, and was nominated for a slew of awards, including two Academy Awards in Production Design and Costume Design which it took home. The limited series has yet to find a home, as the producers intend to shop the project around. The goal of Hirst and A+E Studios is to land the series at a premium cable channel or a major streaming service.
