Our second official casting in HBO and Sony Pictures Television’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us has been announced! Earlier today, it was reported that Game of Thrones alumnus Bella Ramsey was placed in the role of the lead female protagonist, Ellie. However, she will not be the only former cast member from the fantasy series that will be in the upcoming action-adventure series.
In an exclusive report by Deadline, it has just been announced that Pedro Pascal will portray Joel Miller!
The character (Troy Baker) is a man during a post-apocalyptic world who tragically lost his biological daughter Sarah at the onset of the Cordyceps fungus outbreak. Twenty years later, he has become a full-fledged killer and is tasked with transporting a young girl named Ellie (Ashley Johnson) to an organized group called the Fireflies. Ultimately, Joel risks his own life to save hers and puts the fate of the whole world at stake. In this process, Joel and Ellie form a potent bond as adoptive father and daughter while facing human and transhuman evils.
Pascal has had one heck of a week, and it only gets better from here on out. The actor portrayed the Red Viper, Oberyn Martell, in Game of Thrones. He has gone on to appear in television series such as Narcos and The Mandalorian, and most recently, he has landed roles in Wonder Woman 1984 and We Can Be Heroes. There is no doubt he can portray the tragic character that is Joel Miller.
The Last of Us Part II was met earlier this past summer with great critical and fan support for its humanist themes on LGBTQ+ representation, father-daughter relationships, and trauma. HBO then greenlit production on the television adaptation later in November, with Craig Mazin writing and executively producing alongside Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann. Kantemir Balagov is set to direct the series pilot.
