Development has started at Marvel Studios on the first X-Men film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, per a new report from The Illuminerdi. This report should not come as a surprise, as it has been long expected following Disney’s Fox purchase. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has even teased the mutants’ inclusion in the MCU. According to the report, the title of the film will be The Mutants.
Previously owned by 20th Century Fox along with the Fantastic Four, The X-Men were reunited with their Avengers counterparts in 2019 after The Walt Disney Company acquired the studio. Until now, Marvel has only confirmed two titles in development from the former Fox properties: Deadpool 3 (confirmed by star Ryan Reynolds), and Fantastic Four, set to be helmed by Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts. The studio seemingly confirmed the third Deadpool film a few months ago when they hired Bob’s Burgers writers Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux to pen the script.
The report did not offer plot details, nor a team roster. It also does not state how far into development the project is, though it is safe to assume that it is in the very early stages.
The future of the MCU is looking bright, as WandaVision, set to premiere its final episode this Friday, has kicked off the fourth phase of the ever-growing universe. New characters, such as Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, and Blade, will be making their debuts in the coming years, as the stories of Wakanda, Captain Marvel, and the Guardians of the Galaxies, among many others, are continued. Marvel Studios has taken the dive into television once more, this time under the guidance of a single entity rather than under Marvel Television, premiering long-form stories with tentpole blockbuster budgets on Disney+. The addition of the X-Men to the MCU was only a matter of time, and the rumor of their first film in development only furthers Marvel’s ability to maintain fresh and invigorating stories in the coming decade.
