HBO and Sony Pictures Television’s live-action television adaptation of The Last of Us has had some remarkable updates this spring. Earlier this February, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were cast in the iconic roles of Joel Miller and Ellie, respectively. Then, two weeks ago, the series was announced to film for nearly one year in Calgary, Canada.
Yesterday, TLoU has another update. According to multiple news reports, Texas-born Mexican actor Gabriel Luna has been cast in the series as Tommy. In the video game series, he is Joel Miller’s brother and a valuable character to the storyline.
Character Background
The first game begins with Joel, Tommy, and Sarah (Joel’s daughter) fleeing the Cordyceps outbreak in their hometown of Austin, Texas. However, a soldier shoots Sarah and she never makes it out alive. Twenty years later, Joel earns the task of taking Ellie to the Fireflies. They meet Tommy in Jackson, Wyoming, who gives them directions to the organization’s location.
After the ending of The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie return to Jackson. There, they live with Tommy, his wife Maria, and the community at their settlement for five years. In The Last of Us Part II, Joel is killed for murdering the Fireflies’ surgeons and soldiers in his mission to save Ellie’s life. As a result, Ellie and Tommy track down the prime suspect and the accomplices in the crime.
Actor’s Background
Luna is an outstanding actor who has established himself in the film and television world over the past dozen years. His role in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Robby Reyes/ Ghost Rider is a fan-favorite in the comic book community. A spin-off series for the character was in development but never came to fruition. The actor later appeared in Paramount Pictures and Fox’s Terminator: Dark Fate as the android antagonist, Rev-9. He also appears in other filmed projects such as Matador, True Detective, and Wicked City.
I cannot wait to see him act on-screen next to the likes of Pascal and Ramsey. This cast decision is a great move and adds to the diversity that the original story already has. Hopefully, we will receive more announcements for this series as filming nears commencement.
