The 2021 award season was a little crazier than normal, but they made it work. This year’s Oscar ceremony was held in person and virtually at Union Station in Los Angeles. Coverage of the festivities started at 5:00 with red carpet coverage and the ceremony began at 8:00.

I think I liked the Union Station setup more than the Dolby Theater setup. Obviously I understand that it’s all because of covid, but the vibe felt very 1940s/1950s. Circular half booths, jewel tone decor, and velvet all around. It was treated more like a movie set than previous ceremonies. Within the first hour of the ceremony the trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story adaptation aired. It was a short little teaser, but nonetheless I loved it. We also got to see a new exclusive look at In The Heights, a film adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway smash hit musical. Another movie musical that I can’t wait to see.

History was made tonight when Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to win an Oscar for Best Director and Youn Yuh-jung became the first Korean to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Overall, I thought the flow of the show went pretty well. I didn’t feel like it was dragging and maybe that’s a perk of not having a host.
