Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move had its world premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released on HBO Max on July 1. The film was written by Ed Solomon. Soderbergh also handles editing and cinematographer duties under pseudonyms Mary Ann Bernard and Peter Andrews.
No Sudden Move stars an ensemble cast led by Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, and David Harbour. It also stars Jon Hamm, Amy Seimetz, Brendan Fraser, Kieran Culkin, Noah Jupe, Craig Grant, Julia Fox, Frankie Shaw, Ray Liotta, Bill Duke, and Matt Damon.
Discussion
Unfortunately, the film had me disappointed. I don’t want to completely knock the film. However, there are a few elements that seemed unnecessary and left up to director choice rather than a composite and polished movie. The production design is great throughout the film. Although, I’m almost sure that Soderbergh shot the whole movie with a circular lens on the camera. This honestly makes the movie harder to watch at times. It could go unnoticed, but it’s worth pointing out. Of course, it’s still enjoyable. The rest of the movie is great, but the central plot device is something unexpected a bit and confusing at first. It could have been different.
Cast
The main cast is the best part of the film. Cheadle, del Toro, and Harbour even each other out during their screen time. Although, certain members of the cast — Fox and Fraser, particularly — need more time to iron their characters out. Everyone else does their best and Damon’s small role is noteworthy as well.
Final Thoughts
To end on a high note, No Sudden Move is worth checking out if you have HBO Max and a couple of hours to kill. Soderbergh is usually hit or miss for me. Nonetheless, he is still a fantastic director, in his own right, and the film works when it has to.
