WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman is set to direct the next Star Trek film for Paramount. The report comes from Deadline, who confirms little regarding the film. It remains untitled, and has been written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson, the latest to write an entry into the Star Trek universe.
The report also states that the film will go into production in Spring 2022. J.J. Abrams, director of the first two installments in the latest film entries, will produce with his production company Bad Robot.
Shakman recently found success with Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, which was nominated for 23 Emmys earlier today. He hails from the theater, breaking into the film and television industry through Always Sunny, Game of Thrones, and Fargo.
The latest Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, was directed by Justin Lin (F9) in 2016. It starred Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, with a supporting cast of Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, and Karl Urban.
The idea of a new Star Trek film has been kicked around for quite some time, including drafts for a sequel by Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), and a proposed reboot to be directed by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino.
Five years after Beyond‘s release, it is uncertain whether this film will be counted as a sequel, reboot, or spin-off of the Chris Pine-led series.
The Star Trek property has had no trouble on the small screen moving forward after Beyond, with Star Trek Discovery a hit and the spinoff Strange New Worlds set at Paramount+. Star Trek Lower Decks, a raunchy animated series set in the Star Trek continuity has also been immensly popular since its release last year.
Would you like to see the film be a sequel with Chris Pine back in the Captain’s chair, or a reboot with fresh actors and stories? Let us know in the comments below! Check back to stay up to date on the lastest Star Trek news!
