Maleficent 3 is expected to be announced at this year’s D23 Expo, according to a new rumor from The DisInsider‘s Skyler Shuler and Derek Cornell. It comes from the duo’s weekly podcast The DisInsider Show Episode 66 (Spotify | Apple | YouTube) as their “Rumor of the Week.” The DisInsider has a long track record of accurate reporting, including the removal of Mushu and the classic songs from the live action Mulan film, Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimi returning for the Hocus Pocus sequel, and much more.
Shuler and Cornell also state that the star of the Maleficent series, Angelina Jolie, is expected to return for the threequel.
The D23 Expo will be held this weekend in Anaheim from Friday, November 19 to Sunday, November 21. In the past, D23 has been used by Disney to announce major projects, including Marvel Studios‘ Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight series, as well as a slew of projects from Lucasfilm, and many other Disney brands. Despite having just held the first-ever Disney+ Day one week ago, Disney may have been holding out on some more first looks, announcements, and more for the streaming service. They may have some more tricks up their sleeves for upcoming films as well.
The first Maleficent released in 2014 to mediocre reviews but massive box office success. Director Robert Stromberg made his directoral debut with the film that starred Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, and Juno Temple. It went on to gross $758.5 million at the world wide box office. The official synopsis:
A vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child may be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.
The box office success was later gifted a sequel, with both Jolie and Fanning returning to their respective roles of Maleficent and Aurora. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil released in 2019, and was directed by Joachim Rønning. The official synopsis:
Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies and dark new forces at play.
If true, the Maleficent franchise will be the first of Disney’s live action adaptations (albeit a loose adaptation) to complete a trilogy, as many have yet to even find sequels greenlit. Of Disney’s other live action adaptations, 2020’s Mulan reportedly has a second film in the works, as does 2019’s Aladdin. 2017’s Beauty and the Beast has not been given a sequel, but instead a spinoff prequel series following Luke Evans’ Gaston and Josh Gad’s LeFou. The series will be headed for the Mouse House’s residential streaming service Disney+.
Shuler and Cornell didn’t share any details on the plot of Maleficent 3, nor if series star Elle Fanning will be returning for the film. She has found recent success as Catherine the Great in Hulu‘s The Great, starring Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. The Great‘s second season is current releasing on a weekly basis. Despite her commitments to the Hulu series, it would be a strange turn if Disney doesn’t bring back Elle Fanning to round out the Maleficent trilogy, but time will tell.
