Dexter: New Blood Episode Five is titled “Runaway.” Veronica West serves as this week’s writer, while Marcos Siega returns to the director’s chair. This episode marked a return to form for Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), while Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott) makes a couple of mistakes and an old friend returns!
Cast Performances
The cast continues their fine work this week. Hall is at his best in this episode, while everyone else is great. This week’s episode featured special guest star David Zayas as Captain Angel Batista. Without giving away too much, Angela (Julia Jones) and Molly (Jamie Chung) end up in Manhattan to check on Matt at the hotel Kurt said he was in, and for a police conference wherein Batista is a speaker. There’s also another tease The Trinity Killer (John Lithgow)’s return. Meanwhile, Kurt (Clancy Brown) reveals more about his homicidal tendencies.
Character Developments
It seems that Dexter really wants to reveal all of it to Harrison, but Deb continues to make a point and he shutters in the act. They also touch on Dexter and Harrison’s mothers’ murders again, which remains a big theme. In addition, the show continues with its creation of villains that have the weirdest reasons for killing, as Kurt is up there with The Trinity Killer.
Dexter makes a return to his old habits of The Code and nearly makes a kill, but then we’re reminded how small Iron Lake is, twice. Batista’s nicely-timed return also marks a point where Angela begins to piece together Dexter’s past and on top of that, Harrison goes to a party and utters something he shouldn’t have to Audrey (Johnny Sequoyah) who relies it to Angela. From there, we can assume that things are about to go downhill for both Dexter and Harrison.
Other Crucial Elements of Dexter: New Blood
The cinematography is another great staple this week. The lighting, framing and color grading of the episode are some of the best on TV right now. Siega and cinematographer Hillary Fyfe Spera are great behind the camera. They really put the characters at the center of their scenes and the editing tops everything off nicely. The writing and dialogue are terrific as well and Dexter’s inner-monologue is worth mentioning too.
The latter half of this episode was crazy. Angela begins to piece together a puzzle she isn’t going to like the results of and Dexter contemplates his status with Harrison and his new life as Jim. Batista’s return was awesome, regardless of the chain of events it sets in motion and it’s cool to see that he has continued to rise within Miami Metro. This is by far the best episode of the season and next week should continue the roller coaster!
Another couple of great shows you should check out: Yellowjackets on Showtime and Hawkeye on Disney+. It’s a terrific year for TV and film and 2022 should be even better. For more Dexter: New Blood, stay right here with TCS!
