The Book of Boba Fett brings a fan favourite back into the spotlight with an interesting start to the show. “Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land” is directed by Robert Rodriguez and is written by Jon Favreau. The episode stars Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen.

Boba is Back

Episode 1 takes us through the initial setup of how Boba became king of the underworld. Although the story can feel a little scattered at times, it all comes together nicely and gives us more of this character. The transition between flashbacks and ‘present day’ is subtle but very well done with a slight haze to the scene as it transitions. The first time it happened, I didn’t realise what it was. I think it makes a clear divide between the two storylines that we have in the show.

This first episode sets up the story of how Boba Fett gets back into the world and escapes the Sarlacc, along with the beginning of his journey back to what he once was. It’s a fantastic opening that really sets up the story; a character at his lowest, fighting to get back to his full potential. It can be a little slow at times, and it can also feel a little disordered, but it all comes together nicely at the end, and it all makes sense. This will be a show of two stories; the rise and rise of Boba in more than one place.

Rule With Respect

Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett will forever be one of the greatest things. He is cool and subtle, but compassionate and fair. He shows how Boba Fett will be a more honorable ruler than most, even against all of the advice around him. The actor’s skill is mostly through his body language and voice. He is really taking on the role of someone who spends most of their time behind an armour and a helmet. His presence on-screen is demanding, and you can feel that he takes control of all scenes. The subtleties of his character are what make him so powerful and captivating, and I’m excited to see the progression throughout.

I will forever be in love with Ming-Na Wen and everything she does, but Fennec Shand has to be one of my favourite characters. She is fierce and stoic, showing loyalty above all else. The character is everything we love about Star Wars. She’s able to hold her own and isn’t afraid to use force if necessary, but is still fair and aware of what has to be done.

Wen and Morrison feel so right together on screen, and their relationship feels natural. I’m excited to see how they came to be partners, and what they went through to get to where they are now.

Making His Way Through the Galaxy

Chapter 1 of The Book of Boba Fett gives us a great setup for the story. It is a little confusing at times and I feel like there are some parts that don’t blend so well together, but it all makes sense as the episode ends. It will be interesting to see how the two stories of Boba Fett tie in together, and I am also interested to see if they will keep the two storylines up for the entire series, but so far, it is a good start to a new series. The music in this episode is one of my favourite things. It is subtle and powerful, and as the credits started to roll I found myself just listening to the chilling soundtrack. It made me feel like I could conquer a galaxy myself.

It is a good start to the show, and I feel like it fits well within the Star Wars franchise. It isn’t quite The Mandalorian at this point, but the potential to meet this standard is there, we just have to hope that it will get there.

The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 1 is now available to stream on Disney+.
