From Con Air to National Treasure, Nicolas Cage has gifted this world some real gems. He is a household name and an international icon. Actor, producer, comedic genius and meme, there seems to be nothing this man can’t do. Now, he has taken on the ultimate role of playing his most challenging character yet: himself. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent stars Nicolas Cage, Pedro Pascal, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz, Sharon Horgan and Lily Mo Sheen. The film is directed by Tom Gormican and is written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten.
The Ultimate Bromance
This film centres around a struggling Nicolas Cage (Nicolas Cage) and his attempts to get back in the game. He takes what he thinks will be the small job of attending a birthday party for a fan. Enter Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal). A dedicated super-fan who wants nothing more than to impress his hero. But all is not as it seems with the billionaire.
Pascal and Cage have a beautiful friendship on-screen. They complement each other perfectly, and they both have such fantastic timing together. They feel natural, and their friendship is so real that you often wonder how much is acting and how much is just them hanging out together.
Nicolas Cage is brilliant in this film. While there are a few moments that seem a little over the top, it fits perfectly with this ‘character’, and only makes the film more entertaining. Every moment he is on screen he is at the top of his game, and this is a perfect example of why so many people love him.
This film wouldn’t be anything without Pedro Pascal, and how he works with Nicolas Cage. A very different type of character to The Mandalorian, this film gives him a chance to show off how much of a great comedic actor he is. They bounce off each other so well, and Pascal is perfect. He is instantly lovable, funny, and intense. Pascal has created a fantastic character that is a perfect balance to Nicolas Cage, and he is a shining star in this film. He is very expressive and talented and has a skill for balancing his perfect comedic timing with genuine emotion.
A Character Driven, Adult Movie
The story itself is incredibly clever. While we knew this film would be meta, it goes to a deeper level than expected. As the narrative progresses, some small stories and misunderstandings play into the film brilliantly. Each time a decision is made, another level is added to the story that builds on the action and fleshes out the characters. The story is a little crazy and unbelievable at times, but it feels exactly right.
The comedy is mostly on point throughout the film, save for a few small moments that do feel a little forced and out of place. These mostly come from Nicky (Nicolas Cage) but these scenes are not very frequent. All other jokes land perfectly, and the cast has such good timing, and this is all balanced so well with the action and the drama of the film. Nothing feels forced or out of place, and everything flows so smoothly. It’s a crazy story, but it’s perfectly crazy and it feels very natural to a Nick Cage movie.
It isn’t only Pedro Pascal and Nicolas Cage who make this film great. Vivian (Tiffany Haddish) is a brilliant character who adds an extra something to the film. She is funny and emotional and has some great moments. In particular, her quipping with Martin (Ike Barinholtz) is a fantastic addition to the comedy and action.
A Gift To The World
Lighthearted and hilarious, but with deeper moments and a very intelligent story, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a fantastic film. The whole cast works perfectly together, and it is a great balance of humour, action, espionage and drama. It is a Nicolas Cage film unlike any other, but it feels so very… Nick Cage.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will be released in cinemas on 22nd April.
While Unbearable Weight Funko POPs don’t currently exist for Nicolas Cage or Pedro Pascal, you can purchase some from their previous works, Mandy and The Mandalorian. You can purchase them on Amazon here and here!
