Summer is my favorite time of the year to go to the movies. Movie premieres, late night showings, early bird showings, I love it all. I finally got my Cinemark Movie Club subscription back, so I will probably spend all of my days off at the theater. This summer seems to have a great lineup of films, but these are my most anticipated.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie – May 27th
“The Belchers try to save the restaurant from closing as a sinkhole forms in front of it, while the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family’s restaurant.” (IMDb)
I typically don’t get super excited for animated movies, but this one is different. I’ve been a fan of the show since my cousin introduced me in college, and I have no doubt this movie will be just as great.
Jurassic World Dominion – June 10th
“Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live–and hunt–alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures in a new era.” (IMDb)
I feel like I have been waiting centuries for this movie. The original Jurassic Park trilogy is unbeatable, and I’m hoping that we’ll get some of that excitement back with this new one. Bringing back Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum was a great choice.
Lightyear – June 17th
“The story of Buzz Lightyear and his adventures to infinity and beyond.” (IMDb)
I just mentioned I don’t usually get excited about animated movies, and now I have another one on the list. I was getting pretty *insert yawn emoji* with the Toy Story movies. While I am a Woody stan through and through, a space-themed film never fails to excite me. I am also a sucker for an origin story. Most importantly, I can add this movie to my ultra-specific list titled “Movies that take place in space and play David Bowie’s ‘Starman’ in at least one scene.” There are only two on the list right now, but this is only the beginning.
Elvis – June 24th
“A look at the life of the legendary rock and roll star, Elvis Presley.” (IMDb)
There is no shock value here regarding my excitement. If you follow me on Twitter, you know how passionate I am about musical biopics. Jersey Boys, Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody, I’ve tweeted about them all and will continue to. I never expected a Baz Luhrmann/Elvis combination, but after what he did with Moulin Rouge, I think it’s the perfect way to honor a rock’n’roll legend.
Thor: Love and Thunder – July 8th
“Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct.” (IMDb)
The Thor movies keep getting better. Everything is so stunning to me, just from the trailer alone. I loved the pacing of Thor: Ragnarok, and it was fresh and comedic with significant character developments. The trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder gives off the same vibes. It’s wishful thinking, but maybe Thor will catch a break by the end of this one.
Nope – July 22nd
“The residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.” (IMDb)
I am on a journey of self-discovery with the horror genre. I’m merely dipping my toes in the water. I am a huge fan of Jordan Peele’s work, so I think I can handle this. The blend of horror and science fiction is always an incredibly intriguing combo.
Not Okay – July 29th
“A misguided young woman, desperate for friends and fame, fakes a trip to Paris to update her social media presence. A terrifying incident takes place in the real world, which becomes a part of the imaginary trip and offers all she wanted.” (IMDb)
It is the Zoey Deutch and Dylan O’Brien cinematic universe, and I’m simply living in it. After knocking it out of the park in The Outfit, I’m confident that these two will do it again under the direction of Quinn Shephard.
Don’t Worry Darling – September 23rd
“A 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.” (IMDb)
Technically this is not considered a summer flick, but what kind of person would I be if I didn’t include it. A dramatic Stepford Wives-esque thriller is precisely the sort of thing I’m looking for. I know the audience will be in for some twists and shocking revelations along the way. Much like Dylan and Zoey, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles is a duo I want to see more of in the future.
There is a lot of variety in the above movies. Everything ranges from comedy, thriller, horror, musical, etc. There is something for everyone; Stay tuned on our Twitter and Instagram for reviews and updates regarding these movies.
