Put away your pandemic jokes. This is not a drill. Black Mirror is back in development at Netflix after nearly 3 years of licensing uncertainty.
According to an exclusive report from Variety, Black Mirror Series 6 (Season 6, if you’re American) will have more episodes than Series 5’s short, yet star-studded 3-episode run in 2019. The report states that “the latest season is even more cinematic in scope, with each installment being treated as an individual film.”
However, the question of Charlie Brooker’s involvement has not yet been answered. Brooker and creative partner Annabel Jones left House of Tomorrow (HoT) in 2020, and the rights to the show stayed with HoT’s parent company Banijay Group. This created a bit of a licensing purgatory for the show, as Netflix now needed to make a deal with Banijay Group in order to continue making the show. Although Netflix has a five-year deal with Brooker and Jones’ new production entity, Broke & Bones, it is unclear at this time whether the original showrunners will return for Season 6.
There is also the question of the source material itself; in an era of increasing uncertainty across the globe, what use is there for a show that generally illustrates a bleak, ominous, and sometimes all-too-familiar future? In May of 2020, Booker himself told the Radio Times magazine, “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
