Disney has tasked writer/director Guy Ritchie to help oversee the production of a live-action version of Hercules. The $1 billion+ global box-office take of Ritchie’s 2019 live-action adaptation of Aladdin has understandably risen his profile. Ritchie has also been keeping quite busy since then. He released 2020’s The Gentlemen starring Matthew McConaughey. He then immediately followed that up with 2021’s Wrath of Man starring Jason Statham . Most recently, he wrote and directed Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre also starring Jason Statham, which is set for release later this year.

Ritchie initially burst onto the scene with films focused on gangsters, hustlers and thugs. Cult classics like Snatch or Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels highlight the dark humor of the British underworld. Following the success of his popular Sherlock Holmes films, Ritchie found his most success to date with the aforementioned Disney remake of Aladdin.

The key players from the original 1997 animated film Hercules

The original animated Hercules film released in 1997 to rave reviews from fans & critics alike. Lead by the voice talents of Danny Devito and James Woods, the animated classic was praised for its hip sensibilities and contemporary music. The hit ballad “Go The Distance” was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song.

Reports of this live-action development of Hercules dates back to April of 2021. While a lot of time has passed since, Disney is still pursuing writers for the project. The recent hiring of Guy Ritchie definitely shows that at least for now it is full steam ahead.
