Something about me? I have been a nerdy cinephile for as long as I can remember. Putting the two together is living my best life. That notwithstanding, I was born to express, not to impress, so I blog because I don't have friends. In other news, I like hashtags because they look like waffles, prefer my puns intended, and I always give 100% unless I'm donating blood. Thanks for reading.
SDCC 2022 (San Diego Comic-Con, for those unaware) has presented a fantastic assortment of news and entertainment for nerd culture. Marvel and DC, as well as a few other popular streamers and studios, have delivered! There have been ups, downs, and complete bummed announcements (sorry, #RestoreTheSnyderverse faithful).
We were given a Lollapalooza with a dump truck full of SDCC 2022 announcements and trailers inspiring nerds to dance around trash can fires and flail in high-flying cosplay. If you were live in person or waiting for certain awesome websites to refresh their content, everyone in this multiverse buzzing like a honeybee in heat.
Here is what SDCC 2022 shared during the meeting of the geeks.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (Warner Bros./DC)
We finally get to see Billy Batson and his extended family of crimefighters. David F. Sandberg is silently laying the groundwork for what is going to be a dynamic franchise, leading the way to Shazam 3 and his spry encounter with Black Adam. With Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu with her bad self, and the timeless Helen Mirren showing up to bring the thunder, these kids have their hands full. And it’s fire!
The Rings of Power (Prime Video)
The :30 teasers almost broke the Internet. The much-awaited prequel of The Lord of the Rings, subtitled The Rings of Power, looks like the $1 billion investment in bringing this life was well spent. The teasers hearken back to a better day when Peter Jackson showed us the magnitude of Tolkien’s grandiose vision. And now, showrunners Patrick McKay and John D. Payner have picked up right where that Oscar-winning saga left off.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Disney+/Marvel Studios)
Yeah, yeah. No one is interested in her day job, because it’s what she becomes when inspired that everyone was waiting to see. Tatiana Maslany is Jennifer Walters, and cousin to Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). If that didn’t raise your pulse enough, both Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Abomination (Tim Roth) reprise their roles and get us all lathered up for fun.
The Walking Dead (AMC+)
They put the band back together one last time. This gory, dystopian journey of eleven seasons has brought us to this point. What will happen? Who dies now? And, do they finally get one-up on the zombies? Eh, not so much.
Tales of the Walking Dead (AMC+)
And since we are on the subject, AMC+ shared at SDCC 2022 that zombies can have produced offspring. Tales of the Walking Dead is now the third spinoff from its progenitor. Unlike the others, this is not an anthology series. It’s a new story with new characters who could have a new outcome. Then again, these are zombies.
Teen Wolf: The Movie (Paramount+)
One of the most welcomed surprises at SDCC 2022 was the trailer for Paramount’s Teen Wolf. The hormone-ridden days of acne and basketball are long gone. This is a new vision for a new generation. And yes, it’s not your mama’s Teen Wolf. During a panel, Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis shared this movie will provide an “emotional ending” to the story. Good times.
John Wick 4 (Lionsgate)
Now, a quadrilogy–which makes two of those for Keanu Reeves–the lovable assassin and canine rights advocate is back. And this time, he is fighting Ip Man himself, Donnie Yen! This will be the last installment of John Wick, so it should go out with a massive array of fireworks. Easily, one of the best action franchises in film history, this promises to set 2023 off properly.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Paramount)
Welp, Hollywood may be running dry on originality, so it’s back to the world of reboots we go at SDCC 2022. And, since Chris Pine isn’t doing any Star Trek lately (thanks for nothing, JJ Abrams), he becomes a swashbuckling and lute-playing thief on a mission. If you ever played the role-playing game in the past, let your 20-sided die roll. Looks like fun.
The Sandman (DC Comics/Netflix)
This was the most unfortunate trailer release because while everyone was looking for Henry Cavill and getting butthurt about Zack Snyder’s absence, Netflix gave us a trailer from Neil Gaiman’s global spectacular series The Sandman. There have been delays with this coming to reality, but as you saw in the trailer, it was well worth it!
I Am Groot (Disney+)
Now that Disney has finally determined it’s okay to have R-rated entertainment on the Mouse’s streamer, it’s good to see they haven’t lost their style for the kids. The favorite Guardian of the Galaxy is getting his own digital animation. Get the popcorn, and don’t act like “only your kids” will watch this one.
Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire (AMC+)
Few people, including Anne Rice, have been interested in this franchise for decades. But inflation, right? So, here comes the fang-toothed gang to induce the emo crowd again. The AMC+ series follows Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson), Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), and Claudia’s (Bailey Bass) gruesome tale of life, death, and bloodlust as penned by journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian).
Star Trek: Picard (Paramount+)
Here’s another trailer that slipped by–the series finale season of Jean-Luc Picard’s last rendezvous with intergalactic travels. If you haven’t seen this series, it’s worth a binge during a Paramount Plus free trial. During the Star Trek panel at SDCC 2022, showrunner Alex Kurtzman said that Season 3 acts as one The Last Generation movie. Goody goody!
National Treasure: Edge of History (Disney+)
Surprisingly, the Nic Cage comeback tour doesn’t make a stop with this part of the National Treasure franchise. These ancient journeys have given fans a fun ride so far. And speaking of dust, Harvey Keitel stars in this one, alongside Justin Bartha and Lisette Olivera as “Tomb Raider”?!
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Marvel)
Before the children’s character becomes “Moon Girl” and meets her prehistoric pet, this point comes in canon. The story features the voice talents of Alfre Woodard, Sasheer Zamata, Laurence Fishburne, Craig Robinson, Method Man, Wesley Snipes, and Cobie Smulders. Bring your kids, but you know you want to see it too.
Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butthead (Paramount+)
Back when MTV was turning the corner from “music television” to a 24/7 blowtorch of reality TV, Beavis and Butthead was a national inferno of attention. And now, the man behind Office Space and Idiocracy is bringing it back.
Vampire Academy (Peacock)
One of the least staunch streamers out there is Peacock. The NBC Universe has a ton of TV content, but now that Universal joins them on this venture, original content is starting to show up. They target the massively popular young adult series Vampire Academy for a September launch. This should get the ratings for applause. If not, fans may show it the bird.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Marvel Studios)
By the time this movie gets on screen, you won’t be able to meet a single person who ever doubted this long-awaited sequel would work without Chadwick Boseman. Just now, 9 out of every 10 people you meet in the theater are full of crap. His tragic death was shocking and such a bummer, but Kevin Feige knows what he is doing. If this trailer didn’t give you the feels and solidifies that confidence, well–you’re full of crap too. This was all that and then some!
