Something about me? I have been a nerdy cinephile for as long as I can remember. Putting the two together is living my best life. That notwithstanding, I was born to express, not to impress, so I blog because I don't have friends. In other news, I like hashtags because they look like waffles, prefer my puns intended, and I always give 100% unless I'm donating blood. Thanks for reading.

It has been five years since the #MeToo movement started, and among the heinous abusers was Kevin Spacey. Just when the world thought Harvey Weinstein was the worst kind of monster, along come the allegations about celebrity chef Mario Batali, cerebral comedian Louis CK, FOX News bloviate Bill O’Reilly, and Nerdist commander Chris Hardwick.

However, while former assistants and co-stars were hurling grenades at top names in entertainment, one of the sterling names among the cavalcade of perverted miscreants was Kevin Spacey. He was ankle-deep in top headlines thanks to the Netflix runaway hit, House of Cards. Cancel culture jumped on the Oscar-winning actor with the quickness.

Netflix cut ties. Directors of planned projects hollered “Cut.” And everyone who considered themselves fans–present company included–put the brakes on their celebratory praises for the guy. Spacey clearly had an issue, which is what finds him in court today. However, there’s one problem–his attorney has an issue too.

Anthony Rapp, whom you may recognize from Star Trek: Discovery, is suing Kevin Spacey for sexual assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The cost of Spacey’s malevolent misgivings could be $40 million.

The problem, and why we are talking shop about it now, is Spacey’s attorney, Jennifer Keller, is out with COVID-19. Whoops. Keller has been active in Spacey’s defense, handling a good amount of the cross-examinations. Several reports have shared that Judge Lewis A. Kaplan said, “Keller was symptomatic on Thursday morning.”

This hiccup in the Kevin Spacey defense strategy shouldn’t be long. Judge Kaplan said the jury is “all vaccinated to some degree,” as are the legal teams–vaxxed and boosted. Well, except for that one lawyer. She, and every one of the legal beagles, will have to wear masks for the next 10 days.

That should be fun.

That’s a Rapp

ICYMI: This lawsuit involves some incendiary claims. If you need a refresher, here are two paragraphs from NBC News:

Kevin Spacey, drunk and “unsteady on his feet,” lay down on top of Anthony Rapp to “gratify his own sexual desires” at a party in Manhattan in 1986, when Rapp was just 14 and Spacey was 26, a lawyer for Rapp told jurors inside a New York courtroom Thursday.

“What happened to Anthony is something that never should have happened,” Rapp’s lawyer, Peter Saghir, told jurors, adding that his client felt “frozen” during the alleged encounter in Spacey’s bedroom.

Today, Kevin Spacey is 63 and Rapp is 50. Rapp was on record when he claimed what Spacey did to him was “the most traumatic single event of [his] life.” When asked if that was enough for this trial, Rapp said to AP, “I came forward because I knew I was not the only one who Kevin Spacey made inappropriate sexual advances.”

Lisa Rocchio, a forensic psychologist who examined Rapp, testified on Wednesday that he had experienced “a tremendous amount of shame, guilt and confusion” after his encounter with Spacey.

THR, October 2022

COVID or not. Delay of trial or not. One thing is for certain: Keller ain’t the only one who is sick.
