Horror icon Ghostface is doing quite well for a slasher icon. Last year marked the return of the Scream franchise to theaters. We are mere days away from its sixth entry gracing the silver screen after having been greenlit over thirteen months ago. Today, we have just learned that the seventh film in the late Wesley “Wes” Craven’s beloved slasher series will be coming just as soon.
Paramount is sitting on a franchise that has grown increasingly popular. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see their favorite slasher character Ghostface in a new environment. As we wait for the upcoming release, fans craving for more Ghostface might not have to wait as long as with the previous installments.
The writing staff over at Screen Geek shared that a seventh film is around the bend. “[A] follow-up to Scream VI has been officially greenlit. The tentatively-titled Scream 7 is being prepped to shoot this year. The studio hopes to have this film shot and released as quickly as its predecessor.“
The bad news? As of now, Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett), the director behind the fifth and sixth films, are unsure whether they will return for the seventh film.
The good thing about this news is that the studio and Paramount execs believe in the upcoming film to move forward with future projects. There still isn’t much news on the seventh film, nor do we know its story. However, after ScreamVI releases, we might better understand what to expect from the franchise’s future.
Background on the Scream Franchise
The Scream franchise debuted in 1996, and Scream 2 followed the following year in 1997. After that, the sequels began to have gaps between releases. Scream 3 in 2000, followed by the first of two eleven-year hiatuses. Scream 4 was released in 2011; last year, fans received the fifth film, Scream. The only other installment in the franchise was an MTV television series that lasted three seasons. Now that the saga continues, the franchise can thoroughly slash into action.
Scream VI releases in theaters this Friday, March 10th. For now, you can read our full review of the 2022 installment!
