Holy Streaming Wars, Batman! The Hollywood Reporter details that the animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader, is moving to Amazon after being canceled by HBO Max last year. Furthermore, Amazon greenlit the show for two seasons. The move is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s attempts to cut costs and make up the revenue by licensing content to other platforms.

Famed Batman and DC creatives Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, as well as JJ Abrams are developing Batman: Caped Crusader. Timm is best known for working on the DCAU on shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and Justice League. Reeves directed and wrote The Batman and its upcoming sequel. Reeves and Abrams previously collaborated on the found footage monster movie Cloverfield.

Background on Batman: Caped Crusader

The show was announced in 2021 and described as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology”. Reeves and Abrams add: “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

Then in 2022, Ed Brubaker was announced as the lead writer. Brubaker has worked on many comics like Captain America, Catwoman, and Gotham Central. He is best known for creating The Winter Soldier character.

The first season of Batman: Caped Crusader is expected to have 10 episodes, however, it is unclear if this is still the case with the move to Amazon. It is unknown when the show will premiere on Amazon.
