While Scream VI is hitting theaters this weekend, actor Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer Queen, The Fallout, Studio 666, X, Wednesday) could be seen again on screen soon. Ortega could work alongside director Tim Burton on a sequel to the 1988 fantasy comedy, Beetlejuice. The two have previously worked together on Alfred Gough and Miles Millar’s hit coming-of-age supernatural comedy horror series, Wednesday. The Netflix series follows the titular teen character Wednesday Addams of the Addams Family series.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter: “Production is eying a late May or early June shoot in London, but the budget has not been set, resulting in a back and forth. If a deal is made, sources say Ortega would play the daughter of Lydia, the character played by Winona Ryder in the original.”
Casting Jenna Ortega would be a good fit and follows Tim Burton’s history of using familiar faces within his projects. Michael Keaton is also set to be reprising his role as Beetlejuice. However, both Ortega and Warner Bros.’s respective representatives have not commented on the potential project.
Beetlejuice and Its History with Sequels
The classic 1988 film Beetlejuice follows couple Barbra (Geena Davis) and Alex Maitland (Alec Baldwin) tragically passing away in a car accident. When new residents move in, their souls get trapped inside their countryside houses. The spirits attempt to ward off the Deetzes family, but teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) befriends the ghosts. However, an uncontrolled nature named Beetlejuice has plans for the characters.
Beetlejuice had an animated series that ran from 1989 to 1991 and had several video games released around this time. Talks quickly spread about a scripted sequel to the 1989 classic title Beetlejuice 2: Beetlejuice goes to Hawaii. Tragically, Beetlejuice never went to Hawaii on the big screen. However, with the latest news, he may soon return with Scream star Jenna Ortega.
Until Beetlejuice 2 gets more updates, you can catch Jenna Ortega this weekend in Scream VI and as this weekend’s host on SNL. Michael Keaton is set to reprise the mantle of Batman in this summer’s The Flash.
