Get ready for more body-swapping as the fantasy-comedy Freaky Friday is returning. Disney plans to revisit the 2003 film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. The film follows the duo as they wake up to realize they swapped bodies. There has been no news on whether the swap will be between Curtis and Lohan or with an additional character this time. However, Elyse Hollander is set to write the script.
Freaky Friday is based on the 1972 novel of the same name by Mary Rodgers. The novel has received several film adaptations since its release, but the 2003 version is the most successful, grossing $160 million at the box office. Freaky Friday is also one of the most popular films in the body swap genre and remains a pop culture staple. The film is even beloved by Curtis, who is known for referencing the film during interviews and social media.
The Freaky Stars Align
During a twentieth-anniversary interview hosted by the New York Times, Curtis said, “Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'” Curtis also covered fans’ interest in her return to Freaky Friday during press releases for 2022’s Halloween Ends. Earlier in 2023, Curtis posted a photo of herself with Lohan via Instagram, captioned, “It’s Friday. I’m just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed! @lindsaylohan @disney“.
Lohan, who is steadily returning to film, addressed The New York Times in the same article by saying, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.” A sequel to a beloved film would mark a triumphant return to coincide with her recent two-picture Netflix deal.
